The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, NATCOMS, has rejected the shutdown and boycott of telecom service proposal by the Nigeria Labour Congress in protest of the recent 50 percent telecom service tariff hike.
NATCOMS National President Adeolu Ogunbanjo made this position known while reacting to NLC’s call to boycott telecom services.
According to him, the right way to address dissatisfaction is through the court, not industrial action.
“Going to court is the civil way of doing things, not boycotting telecom services.
“We are not backing the NLC at all. It will send wrong signals to investors. These are private businesses, and President Bola Tinubu is trying hard to woo investors. So we can’t support that rascality,” he said.
It would be recalled that on Wednesday, NLC president Joe Ajaero, while rejecting the 50 percent telecoms hike, called for a nationwide boycott of telecoms services to force the Nigerian government to reverse the hike.
This comes as the leader of Nigerian workers decried that the latest telecoms hike would further impoverish citizens.
Recall that on Monday, the Nigerian Communications Commission announced that it has approved a 50 percent upward telecoms tariff hike for operators.
The development stirred controversies in the country’s economy as Nigerians lament it on already rising inflation.
NATCOMS earlier announced a plan to drag the federal government to court over the tariff hike.
Meanwhile, telecom operators under the aegis of the Association of Licenced Telecommunications Operators said the hike is necessary to avert the shutdown of Nigeria’s telecom sector.
The Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, disclosed this in an interview with DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS on the matter.
He stated that the tariff hike will boost investment in the sector and guarantee improved quality of services to telecoms subscribers.
