Former People’s Democratic Party governorship candidate in Kogi State, Dino Melaye, says PDP has cleverly complied with an Abuja court’s order which said the embattled Acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, should not be sacked from office.
The outspoken Melaye, in a post on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, said Damagum was suspended as Acting National Chairman of the PDP and not sacked.
He said : “In compliance with the court order, not to sack Damagun, he has been suspended and not sacked. We have obeyed the court order because PDP is a law-abiding party.
”The suspension will aid the resolution of the crisis in our party,” he said.
DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reports that the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Friday issued an order preventing the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from removing Umar Damagum from his position as Acting National Chairman of the party.
Justice Peter Lifu ruled that only the party’s national convention, slated for December 2025, has the authority to elect or replace national officers. As a result, no one other than Damagum can be recognized as the PDP national chairman until then.
The judgment came after Senator Umar El-Gash Maina filed a lawsuit against the party’s leadership, alleging that some stakeholders were secretly plotting to remove Damagum in violation of the PDP constitution.
However, a moment later, a faction of the PDP announced the immediate suspension of Damagum, citing anti-party activities, among others, as reasons for the suspension.
