SSANU, NASU Tackle FG, Reject Partial Salary Payment, Continue Strike

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions announced that the Federal Government has only disbursed one month of the four months’ worth of withheld salaries.

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation confirmed on the same day that the released salaries were the reason university workers initiated their strike.

The unions, operating under the JAC, began an indefinite strike on Monday due to the outstanding four months of unpaid salaries, which resulted in a nationwide shutdown of university activities.

SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim pointed out that key university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also not received their salaries, further disrupting university operations.

Ibrahim stated that compliance with the strike has been high, with 98 percent of members participating, and affirmed that they would not return to work until their demands are fully addressed.

In an interview with our correspondent, the chairman of SSANU and JAC, Muhammed Ibrahim, confirmed that while some members have started receiving salaries, only one out of the four months of withheld salaries has been paid. “Yes, they paid one month out of four. We will meet to assess the situation. However, not everyone has received their payment yet,” he said.
