Methodist Church Nigeria Tackles Tinubu On Economic Downturn, Political Uncertainties

*** Diocese of Jos Assures On Continue Prayers for Nation’s Survival

Methodist Church Nigeria has expressed concern over the nation’s economic downturn and political uncertainties, punching the Tinubu-led administration on the “survival of the fittest” mindset which has resulted in misrule and maladministration.

Rising from her 23rd annual Synod, the Diocese of Jos of Methodist Church Nigeria in a Communique jointly signed by the Diocesan Bishop, Rt Rev. Daniel Agbese, PhD, JP and the Synod Secretary, Very Rev. Nwankwo Kenneth Nwabueze, JP, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the anomalies including “widespread poverty and hunger, risks pushing Nigeria toward anarchy unless urgent action is taken to prioritize citizens’ welfare and security.”

“The 23rd Annual Synod noted that Nigeria’s political leadership lacks morality and effective solutions to the nation’s socio-political and economic problems, promoting selfishness, greed, and a disregard for human life.

“It observed a shift from traditional African communal values to a “survival of the fittest” mindset, resulting in misrule and maladministration.

“The Synod calls on all arms of government to uphold good governance, strengthen welfare initiatives, and address corruption, insecurity, unemployment, inflation, injustice, deceit, and power imbalance.

“It also urges Nigerians, especially Christians, to pray for the nation and its leaders.

Also, the Synod expressed concern over Nigeria’s economic downturn, high forex rates, and rising cost of living, which have caused widespread hardship. The government was urged to adopt effective poverty-alleviation policies, promote job creation, food security, and infrastructure development. Addressing the brain drain, farmers-herders conflict, fuel subsidy removal, and foreign exchange harmonization were also emphasized.

The Church on the other hand was encouraged to invest in ventures that generate funds and employment for members.

On Democracy, “The Synod condemned the growing disconnect between leaders and citizens, coupled with widespread poverty and hunger, risks pushing Nigeria toward anarchy unless urgent action is taken to prioritize citizens’ welfare and security.

The Synod resolved to commit herself to work for the transformation of society though the gospel.

The Synod condemned all forms of violence, especially against women and children and shall work for the economic empowerment of those who are deprived; and shall be a voice for persecuted Christians.

The church then urged all political actors to engage in peaceful dialogue and collaboration, prioritizing the interests of the nation over personal or political agendas. We also call for fair and transparent elections to ensure a peaceful and democratic transition of power.

On the deplorable security situation on the Plateau, “the Synod highlighted the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, including violent attacks in previously safe areas like Plateau State.

“Armed groups act without consequence, and cases like Sunday Jackson’s sentencing and Deborah’s killing expose judicial bias. Recent deadly attacks in Bokkos and Bassa further emphasize the crisis. The Synod acknowledged the Plateau State government’s quick response and urged President Tinubu’s administration to ensure citizens’ safety and adequately equip the military.

“Christians were encouraged to remain vigilant and prayerful, supporting security efforts and partnering with the state for peace.”

The Synod also advocated for reforms to restore justice, protect citizens, and urged the legislature to fulfill its constitutional duties. Social justice, equality, and inclusivity for all Nigerians, regardless of background, must be upheld.

“The judiciary is increasingly seen as corrupt and influenced by political powers, delivering biased and predictable verdicts. Harsh penalties for minor offenses and leniency for major criminals have led to public distrust,” the Communique concluded.
