‎‎JUST IN: PDP Candidate, Folajimi Oyekunle, Declared Winner Of Ibadan North By-Election, ADC Kicks, Alleges Vote-buying

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, popularly known as DoN, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the hotly contested Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election.

‎The Returning Officer, Professor Abiodun Oluwadare of the University of Ibadan, made the announcement on Saturday at the Collation Centre in Ikolaba High School, Ibadan.

‎According to the official results, Hon. Oyekunle secured 18,404 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Hon. Adewale Olatunji, widely known as Murphy, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 8,312 votes.

‎This victory means Oyekunle will succeed the late Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi (Jagaban), whose passing created the vacancy and prompted the bye-election.

‎The triumph is being celebrated as a historic comeback for the PDP, reclaiming the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat for the first time since 2011.

‎Excited party supporters flooded the streets in jubilation shortly after the declaration, describing the result as a “coast-to-coast victory” and a reaffirmation of the PDP’s growing popularity in Oyo State.

‎However, the ADC Candidate, Dr Femi Dexter, kicked against the declaration citing vote buying.in a statement he personally signed to react to the outcome of the polls.

‎He commended voters for their Steadfastness and believing in his brand. See the full text of his messagem

‎DR FEMI DEXTER AKIN-ALAMU’S PRESS STATEMENT ON TODAY’S ELECTION (SATURDAY AUGUST 16, 2025)

‎First, I want to deeply appreciate everyone who stood with us, worked, sacrificed, and believed in this vision. Your commitment and courage inspire me, and I am proud of what we achieved together. This is not the end — it is only a bend, and our future remains bright.

‎What happened today was not an election. The government has deliberately impoverished the people so votes can be cheaply bought with rice, noodles, and a few thousand naira. What used to be hidden has now become open trade — votes openly canvassed for ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 like goods in a market stall.

‎To make things worse, our opponents spread false claims that I had stepped down, confusing many of our supporters. This shameless style of politics is exactly what we are fighting against.

‎Whilst I cannot in good faith congratulate the declared winner, I am extremely proud that we ran this race to the very end with dignity. We did not bow to compromise, and we did not sell out.

‎To all our supporters — stand tall. We are building something bigger than one election. Change takes time, but together, we will birth the Nigeria of our dreams.

‎Signed,

‎Dr. Femi Dexter Akin-Alamu
