‎JUST IN: [#ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow] Police Fire, Shots Tear Gas At Abuja Protesters; Some Arrested

‎Organiser of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest has escaped gunshots at the protest grounds in Abuja.

‎As early as 7 am on Monday, security operatives, comprising police and military officers, took over the protest grounds.

‎In a viral video, Sowore could be seen running for his life, alongside other protesters.

‎The protesters intended to march to Aso Rock Villa to demand the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

‎The security operatives fired tear gas canisters at the protesters, including Sowore.

‎The protest was planned to take off from the Transcorp Hilton area and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory, but the police moved in early, firing multiple rounds of tear gas to disperse participants and passersby.

‎The operatives, who had cordoned off the hotel and adjoining streets, began firing tear gas even before protesters arrived in large numbers.

‎Across the city on Monday morning, a visibly tightened atmosphere has been observed.

‎Soldiers, police team, and operatives of the Department of State Services were deployed to key locations, including the Three Arms Zone, Eagle Square, Federal Secretariat, Unity Fountain, and routes leading to Aso Rock.

‎DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reports that all offices of MDAs in the Federal Secretariat were deserted and workers could not get access to their offices following the blockade of roads leading to the Central Business a district of Abuja.

‎Our correspondent gathered that some protesters calling for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, have been arrested by security operatives in Abuja.

‎The protesters, led by Human Rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, had converged for the peaceful protest for the release of Kanu.

‎Confirming the arrest, Human Rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju in a post on X, said the protesters were attacked and arrested by the security operatives.

‎He wrote, “Nigerian police firing teargas non stop around Transcorp, Federal Secretariat and Villa. They have blocked the entire roads leading to Aso Rock.”

‎Providing an update in a post on his X account, Sowore said the police arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor and some innocent bystanders.

‎He added that “They were beaten and taken to the FCT command.”
