A woman who spent decades waiting for marriage has touched thousands of people after finally tying the knot for the first time at the age of 60.
Her inspiring story of faith, patience and perseverance has sparked conversations about the pressure many single people face from society and even within religious communities.
The woman, identified as Obianuju “Auntie Eki” Odeobi, shared her emotional journey on the Happily Together YouTube show, revealing how years of hope eventually led her to meet the man she would marry.
Her husband travelled from South Africa to begin a new chapter with her, proving that love can arrive at any stage of life.
For many years, family members, friends and acquaintances believed she would never get married. However, she refused to give in to despair, choosing instead to trust that her life would unfold in its own time.
Speaking during the interview, Auntie Eki said the journey was not easy. She admitted that remaining single for decades exposed her to endless questions and expectations, particularly in church settings where marriage is often viewed as an important milestone.
She recalled confronting a pastor who frequently urged single members of the congregation to seek prayers for marriage.
According to her, the repeated emphasis placed unnecessary pressure on unmarried believers.
“I felt the church should not put that kind of pressure on young people. Even girls as young as 15 begin worrying about marriage because of what they hear,” she said.
Auntie Eki explained that she reminded the pastor of the biblical story of Mary and Martha, noting that Jesus valued them without making marriage the measure of their worth.
She said the conversation changed the pastor’s approach, and he stopped singling out unmarried women for special prayers.
Her outlook on life changed dramatically in 1995 after attending a Bible study on the Lordship of Christ. During that period, she surrendered her desire for marriage to God through a heartfelt prayer, asking Him to guard her heart until the right partner came into her life.
Over the years, she focused on serving God through The Navigators, an international Christian discipleship ministry.
Although marriage did not come immediately, she said she experienced other blessings, including owning a home and a car in her 50s.
Everything changed in March 2025 when a widower she had known through the ministry contacted her. Their friendship quickly developed into a serious relationship, and after a short courtship, he proposed.
She accepted after taking time to pray about the decision. One of the factors that convinced her was the warm welcome she received from his children, especially his daughter, with whom she formed an instant bond.
The couple later celebrated their union through traditional, civil and church ceremonies, fulfilling a dream she had carried for more than three decades.
Despite the joy of her wedding, Auntie Eki admitted she was saddened that her late mother, who had faithfully prayed for her marriage, did not live to witness the special day.
She encouraged single people not to measure their lives by society’s expectations or timelines.
“God loves you more than any human being ever will. Open your heart to Him and trust His timing,” she advised.
Her story has resonated with many people across Africa, offering hope to those who feel discouraged by delayed dreams.
It also highlights the importance of respecting individual life journeys and avoiding unnecessary pressure over marriage, reminding many that love can come unexpectedly, regardless of age.
