*** Insists ‘No Candidate Should Hide Behind High Walls of Power’
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr Peter Obi, has challenged all presidential contenders ahead of the 2027 election to face Nigerians, defend their records and subject their plans for the country to public scrutiny.
DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reports that the former Anambra State governor made the call on Friday as he formally launched his campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
Obi said Nigerians deserve direct engagement with those seeking to lead the country, rather than relying on surrogates to communicate their policies and intentions.
He urged presidential candidates to travel across the country, engage citizens and answer questions about their records, policies and vision for Nigeria.
According to him, “You cannot truly lead people you are unwilling to visit, listen to, and understand.”
The NDC candidate also said effective leadership requires more than political promises, stressing the importance of leaders being physically present in communities affected by insecurity, displacement and natural disasters.
”Any presidential candidate who lacks the resolve to travel across the country, meet the people, and respond to their questions lacks the capacity to govern it.”
He pointed to Nigerians living with the consequences of banditry, terrorism, criminality and flooding, saying leaders must demonstrate empathy and understand the realities confronting affected communities.
Obi further argued that candidates unwilling to engage Nigerians directly across the country may lack the capacity to effectively govern the nation.
As he begins his campaign, the former governor said his agenda is focused on rebuilding national unity, strengthening security, promoting inclusive economic growth and moving Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy towards one centred on production.
The campaign launch comes as political parties and presidential hopefuls step up preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the contest expected to intensify in the months ahead.
