Thousands Affected As FCTA Marks 500 Illegal Structures For Demolition…Gives 24 Hours Notice

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has marked 500 illegal structures for demolition.

Accordingly, owners of the marked illegal structures have been given 24 hours notice to remove their belongings.

An Assistant Director in the Department of Development Control, Tpl Garba Jubrin, who led the team, said these over five hundred illegal structures and shanties are mostly used by operators of informal market along Karma and Dei- Dei axis, as such structures sit on road corridors.

Speaking during the exercise, Jubrin said that before today’s exercise, several notices had been served and was followed by sensitization meetings by the stakeholders and the Director of Development Control, Tpl Mukhtar Galadima.

Jubrin stated that the structures are constituting nuisance on the road, thereby causing heavy traffic, especially on their market days.

He also said that the traders had earlier been asked to move to designated fully developed market known as Karmo market with every facilities put in place like every other modern markets, but the traders have been reluctant.

According to him, several meetings with the relevant stakeholders, Traditional Rulers, and market operators have been held with promises to give incentives to accommodate them in both informal and formal markets, to ensure their smooth operation and well-being.

Jibrin expressed optimism that there will be a successful transition from the road corridors to the main market after the demolition exercise to ensure free flow of traffic.

“It could be recalled that the FCTA has awarded the contract for the construction of Gwarimpa I District (Life-Camp) to Dei-Dei and their continuous stay on the road corridors constitute hindrance to the commencement of the project,” Jibrin added.
