Atiku Abubakar, who served as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, is reportedly strategizing to establish a new political party.
This decision follows his defeat in the 2023 election, where Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged victorious as Nigeria’s 16th president.
It’s speculated that Atiku aims to launch this new party to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 election.
Sources have revealed that Atiku has initiated plans for the formation of this prospective party in collaboration with certain members of the National Assembly.
Concerns about disunity within the leading opposition party have led Atiku’s camp to take action, fearing that persistent discord could hinder their ability to seize power from the ruling APC, led by Tinubu and Abdullahi Ganduje.
Reports suggest that Atiku has been consulting with former Zamfara state Governor Abdulaziz Yari and the chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF), Abdul Ningi, among others, to advance their agenda.
Their objective is to bolster their position within the Senate and pave the way for the realization of their political ambitions.
Following Atiku’s defeat in the 2023 election, he and his associates are now focused on forming a formidable political entity capable of challenging the APC’s dominance in the 2027 general election.
Their efforts are driven by a perception of parallels between the current political landscape and that of 2014, during Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s presidency, prompting them to envision the establishment of a mega party as a viable solution.
It’s suggested that Ningi’s recent statement on the BBC Hausa Service serves as a strategic maneuver by the proponents of the mega party to sow discord within the National Assembly, thereby destabilizing the current political establishment.
This calculated approach underscores their determination to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape in anticipation of the forthcoming elections.
