BREAKING: Lagos Assembly Takes Fresh Action on Speaker Meranda, Shuts Down Plenary

Amid the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly, lawmakers on Monday passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Princess Mojisola Meranda, to continue to steer the affairs of the House.

The development comes amidst speculation about her possible resignation as leader of the House.

DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS earlier reported how operatives of the Department of State Security, DSS, and Nigeria Police Force took over the Assembly complex.

The operatives took over the Assembly complex at Alausa, Ikeja, to ensure adequate security during the plenary.

After the vote of confidence, the House adjourned sitting till further notice.

The decision came after Oladipo Ajomale, a lawmaker representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, moved a motion to reaffirm trust in Meranda’s leadership. Speaking during Monday’s session, Ajomale emphasized that Meranda was elected according to the Nigerian Constitution and other relevant laws.

“We have chosen you as our Speaker because we believe in your leadership. It is important to make it clear that this decision was made by elected members of the House,” Ajomale stated.

He then called on his colleagues to publicly affirm their confidence in Meranda by raising their hands and standing in agreement. In a video which has gone viral, all members supported the motion.

Following this vote of confidence, the Assembly announced an indefinite suspension of plenary.

Earlier in the day, heavily armed operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian police stormed the Assembly complex. The security forces sealed off the offices of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the Clerk of the House.

The tension follows the recent impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker. Obasa, who was out of the country at the time of his removal, has since challenged his impeachment in court, claiming it was unlawful.
