The Federal Government has warned that 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory will experience five days of heavy rainfall, which may lead to flooding.
The prediction, issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Ministry of Environment, advises people living near Rivers Donga, Benue, and Ogun to evacuate due to rising water levels.
The forecast, which covers October 14 to October 18, 2024, highlighted areas that are likely to be affected by flooding. Communities living in flood-prone areas in these regions are urged to take precautions.
The states and locations expected to experience heavy rainfall include Osun (Ede, Ile-Ife, Ilesa, Osogbo), Delta (Escravos), Cross River (Ikom), and Anambra (Onitsha). Other states mentioned are Taraba, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Gombe, Katsina, Borno, Kaduna, Niger, Yobe, Adamawa, Kogi, Kwara, Bauchi, Plateau, Kano, Oyo, Sokoto, and Zamfara. The FCT locations affected include Kubwa, Gwagwalada, and Bwari.
The report stated, “Due to the rise in water levels of Rivers Donga, Benue, and Ogun, communities living near these rivers, as well as other flood plains, are advised to evacuate.”
The government is urging residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to protect their lives and property.
