Ibadan Court Remands Tenant, Dickson Peter In Prison For Setting Landlord’s House On Fire

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ibadan has ordered that a 35 year-old-man, Dickson Peter, be reminded in prison pending his charge with two counts of felony and arson.

The Chief Magistrate, M. Mudashiru, however did not take the accused person’s plea due to want of jurisdiction and consequently ordered that he should be remanded in Abolongo Correctional facility, Oyo Town.

The Chief Magistrate said the remand order will subsist pending when legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) will be available.

Earlier, the prosecution’s lawyer, Inspector Femi Oluwadare, had told the court that Peter, on April 18, at about 12:30a.m, unlawfully set fire to the house of his landlord, Cepas Okeme, and destroyed property worth N6.5 million.

Oluwadare added that after he set the building on fire, the inferno spread to the next house, a property belonging to one, Bose Ali, and also destroyed property worth N3.5 million.

The alleged offence was said to have contravened the provisions of Section 443 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

Further hearing in the matter has been adjourned to July 23, 2024.
