Injury Toll Rises To 22 In Lagos Gas Explosion

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the number of injured persons in the fire incident that rocked the Alayabiagba community in the Ajegunle-Apapa area of Lagos State on Tuesday has risen to 22.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a post on his X page on Wednesday.

DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reported on Wednesday that a yet-to-be-identified pregnant woman and eight others sustained varying degrees of injury in the gas explosion that occurred at about 12:39 p.m.

The Head, Public Education, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiru, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said the preliminary inquiry revealed that several different gas cylinders that were traded in the area had one that was set off by a possible leak that broke a high-tension cable and started a fire.

He added that the fire destroyed four commercial tricycles, six lock-up stores, and a portion of a bungalow building.

Hundeyin, while replying to a video of the incident shared by an X user, noted that no lives were lost.

The PPRO wrote, “There was no death. 22 persons had various degrees of burn and are responding to treatment at the Gbagada General Hospital and Ajeromi General Hospital. The police were on the ground to prevent a breakdown of law and order.”

DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS had reported that no fewer than 14 buildings were gutted by fire in Dosumu Market in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State earlier this month.
