There are strong indications that the Presidency is shopping for a replacement for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reports.
This is as five Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) retired statutorily last Saturday, according to sources.
They are: Bala Ciroma (North East), Dasuki Galadanchi (North West), Jonathan Toworu (South South), Ari Mohammed Ali (North Central) and Badru Banji Lawal (South West).
Discrete investigations by our correspondent revealed that several Assistant Inspector Generals (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) are due to retire this week.
It also reported that IGP Egbetokun was given a six-month extension, which elapses today (4 March 2025). Presidency sources could not confirm if the four-year tenure in the Police Act of 2024 for future IGPs is extended to Egbetokun, who was Nigeria’s No. 1 policeman on 19 June 2023.
Egbetokun was 60 years old last 4 September, and speculations were rife then that he might be retired.
Last Friday, the Police Service Commission (PSC) approved promotion to DIG of AIG Sulieman Amuda Yusuf, who is in charge of Zone 9 Umuahia; and AIG Rhoda Adetutu Olofu, former Force Secretary.
They are to replace two of the retired DIGs.
A source close to the PSC disclosed that three new DIGs would be appointed on Wednesday to replace the remaining three retired DIGs
Yusuf and Olofu were appointed to occupy the vacancies created by the retirement of the DIGs in charge of Operations, and that in charge of Information and Communication Technology.
They were also the most senior officers representing the North Central geo-political zone in the Nigeria Police Force.
Olofu had also been AIG Maritime Police Command, Lagos; CP Ports Authority Police Western Ports Command; CP X- Squad, Force CID; and CP Servicom in the Department of Research and Planning.
