The entry points of some of the nation’s airports were blocked this morning due to the nationwide strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reports.
Intending travellers who made their ways to the various airports especially the Murtala Mohammed International Airport MMA 1 and 2 in Lagos were left stranded on Monday morning as all entry points into the domestic terminal are inaccessible to the people.
It was gathered that all the unions in the aviation industry are united in the struggle hence they joined in the strike. The unions are the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) as well as Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP).
The situation was the same in Abuja as passengers travelling from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport were left stranded at the airport as the NLC, TUC strike ensured that the offices were shut.
At Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport Owerri, passengers who wanted to travel to various destinations within the country were left stranded as the gates leading to the premises were shut by aviation unions.
All other airports in the country are reported to have witnessed the same situation as organised labour makes good its threat to ground the economic activities of Nigeria over the minimum wage palaver.
Meanwhile many affiliates of NLC and TUC such as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), National Union of Banks Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), the National Union of Civil Engineering, Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW), and Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) have already withdrawn their services nationwide.
Other affiliates that have withdrawn their services include the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG),
Nigeria Union of Railway Workers and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
