Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government hastily adjusted salary structures with 25% and 35%, organised Labour has vowed to cripple all activities nationwide, should the Federal Government fail to conclude negotiations on a new minimum wage by the end of May, 2024.
This was a unanimous positioned contained in a May Day address read by President’s of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo respectively, on Wednesday in Abuja, where a mammoth crowd of workers had gathered to celebrate the annual workers day celebration.
Leadership of the labour movements who placed their members on an alert to ensure the process was not sabotaged, noted that after placing an offer of N615,000 as a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, labour was still awaiting a counter offer from the government, represented by the National Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee.
While rejecting the 300% increase in electricity tariff, and raising concerns over deliberate sabotage of domestic refineries to forestall domestic production of petroleum products, labour regretted that many of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies run counter to constitutional imperatives and as such, have plunged millions of Nigerians into abject poverty.
