PRESS RELEASE
CEHRAWS CONDEMNS THREATS AGAINST CHINEDU AGU ESQ.; WARNS TIGER BASE AND DEMANDS IMMEDIATE PROTECTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Aba, Abia State, Nigeria | 27th December 2025
The Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society (CEHRAWS) expresses grave concern and unequivocal condemnation over the credible threats to the life and safety of Chinedu Agu Esq, a lawyer and a human-rights advocate, following his principled exposure of alleged atrocities linked to the Tiger Base Unit of the Imo State Police Command.
CEHRAWS stands in firm solidarity with Chinedu Agu, Esq. His advocacy, publications, and public engagements constitute lawful civic expression protected under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and international human-rights instruments to which Nigeria is a State Party. Any threat, intimidation, surveillance, or harm directed at him or his family is criminal, unconstitutional, and an assault on democratic accountability.
We note with deep concern the disturbing pattern wherein journalists, activists, and whistleblowers who expose alleged abuses attributed to Tiger Base are reportedly subjected to intimidation. This pattern, if unchecked, signals institutional impunity and a reckless disregard for the sanctity of human life. CEHRAWS hereby puts Tiger Base on notice: any unlawful action against Chinedu Agu Esq or any rights defender will attract sustained national and international scrutiny and legal consequences.
CEHRAWS demands the following immediate actions:
1. Immediate protective measures for Chinedu Agu Esq and his family by the Nigeria Police Force and relevant security agencies.
2. A public assurance from the Inspector-General of Police and the Imo State Government guaranteeing his safety and condemning threats against rights defenders.
3. An independent, transparent investigation into allegations of threats and any involvement of Tiger Base personnel, with offenders prosecuted in accordance with the law.
4. Institutional reforms and oversight of Tiger Base, including accountability for all documented allegations of torture, extra-judicial killings, and enforced disappearances.
CEHRAWS calls on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the United Nations human-rights mechanisms, foreign diplomatic missions, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and allied civil society organisations to take urgent cognisance, maintain protective attention, and insist on accountability.
Let it be clearly stated: threats will not silence truth. The protection of human-rights defenders is a legal obligation of the Nigerian State. Any harm to Chinedu Agu Esq will be squarely attributable to institutional failure and will be pursued through all lawful national and international channels.
CEHRAWS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to justice, the rule of law, and the defence of human dignity. We will continue to stand with those who speak truth to power, without fear and without compromise.
Signed:
Okoye, Chuka Peter
