Rivers Crisis: PDP Dares 27 Lawmakers To Impeach Fubara

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has dared the state lawmakers who threatened to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The party rebuffed the 27 lawmakers of the Assembly threatening to impeach Governor Fubara, asserting that they lack of legitimacy to execute such a move.

The People’s Democratic Party also slammed the Rivers State House of Assembly and the All Progressives Congress for allegedly attempting to stampede Governor Siminalayi Fubara to act outside the law.

The PDP described the renewed threat by the lawmakers to impeach Fubara as an embarrassment and a public nuisance to the state.

The state PDP Publicity Secretary, Sydney Gbara, said this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday.

It would ve recalled that the 27 lawmakers said to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had on Sunday said they may revisit Fubara’s impeachment as a last resort to enforce their responsibilities and uphold the constitution.

According to a statement by the PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Sydney Tambari Gbara, the lawmakers should desist from causing unrest and allow the court to determine their legitimacy.

He urged them to address their legitimacy question following their defections from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the light of Section 109 of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

Gbara criticized the lawmakers’ actions, stating: “You have several cases querying your legality in courts, why are you running away from them? You are here constituting public nuisance, engaging in illegal assembly, taking illegal decisions and making illegal laws, knowing full well that you no longer represent your constituents.”

He warned that history would not view kindly those who choose to disrupt peace instead of seeking reconciliation, saying: “The founding fathers of the state would be crying that a group of young people had decided to be used as agents of destabilization of their state, the government and its people.”

Gbara also responded to claims of non-implementation of the eight-point Peace Accord by Tony Okocha, stating: “Although we are not holding brief for the state government, as a party, let me tell Tony Okocha that Governor Siminialayi Fubara has in his desire to further deepen peace in the state implemented the Peace Accord and in accordance with our laws. So, your attempt to try to stampede Governor Fubara into taking unconstitutional actions is like blowing hot air.”
