A Benin City, Edo State-based teenage girl simply identified as Patience, has related how her mother, Mrs. Nata Igbinovia, was hacked to death by a father and his son, while separating a fight.
The deceased reportedly met her gruesome death in the hands of Mr. Ayo Philip and his yet-to-be-identified son (now at large).
The incident happened on Saturday night at Okpagha, an outskirt community of Benin city, along Auchi Road.
Patience explained that her mother was separating a fight between her nephew and their neighbours (the suspects) after a heated argument when they hacked her to death with a knife and an axe.
She alleged that during the argument, Mr. Philip brought out a knife to stab their nephew but was blocked by her mother who got injured in the process.
She added that the deceased thereafter fell down, while the suspect’s son who had ran inside their room, came out with an axe and hit her mother with it on her back, just as his father who was still holding the knife again stabbed her mother on the chest.
According to Patience, on seeing the deceased lying unconscious on the ground, the suspects fled before sympathizers could reach the scene.
She said a good samaritan in the neighbourhood who heard of the incident immediately brought a vehicle in which the deceased was taken to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.
It was gathered that operatives of the Eyaen police division have visited the scene and had already commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
When contacted, Edo Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed that Mr. Philip has been arrested
“Yes, the Command is aware of it, investigation has begun, the suspect, Philip Ayo, has been arrested yesterday. Investigation into the murder case is still on,” he said.
