‎Sermon: The Power of Persistent Prayer by The Revd Muyiwa Ogunkoya

Text: Luke 11:10 – “For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Introduction
‎Prayer is one of the greatest privileges of the believer. It is not merely a religious routine but a divine invitation to commune with the Almighty God. In Luke 11:10, Jesus reveals the guaranteed response of heaven to sincere, persistent prayer. The key words — ask, seek, knock — show increasing levels of desire, intensity, and pursuit.
‎In a world filled with quick fixes and instant results, this verse reminds us that divine answers often require persistence, faith, and trust.

Main Body
‎1. Ask – The Beginning of Prayer (Luke 11:10a)
‎Asking is the starting point of prayer — a humble request that acknowledges God as the Source.
‎James 4:2b – “You do not have because you do not ask God.”
‎Matthew 7:7 – “Ask, and it shall be given to you…”
‎Asking shows dependence on God. He delights in answering the petitions of His children.
Application:
‎Are you asking God with faith or with doubt? (James 1:6-7) says the doubter should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
‎2. Seek – The Desire Behind Prayer (Luke 11:10b)
‎Seeking implies more than asking — it shows desire, effort, and intentional pursuit.
‎Jeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
‎Psalm 63:1 – “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you…”
‎Seeking goes beyond material needs to pursuing the heart of God.
Application:
‎Are you seeking God or just what He gives? Real seekers long for His presence, not just His presents.
‎3. Knock – The Persistence of Prayer (Luke 11:10c)
‎Knocking implies persistence — you continue until the door is opened.
‎This mirrors the parable just before this verse: Luke 11:5–8 – the friend at midnight who kept knocking until his friend responded.
‎Luke 18:1-8 – the parable of the persistent widow. Jesus taught this to show that we should always pray and not give up.
‎Knocking shows tenacity, urgency, and faith that refuses to quit.
Application:
‎Have you stopped knocking too soon? Keep knocking — your door is just about to open!
‎Other Relevant Scriptures
‎Hebrews 4:16 – “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…”
‎Isaiah 62:6-7 – “Give yourselves no rest, and give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem…”
‎1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing.”
Conclusion
‎Luke 11:10 is a divine guarantee — everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds, and the one who knocks has the door opened. The order is not accidental. It calls us to deepen our relationship with God through consistent, fervent prayer.
