A celebrated South African actress, Connie Chiume, has passed away at the age of 72.
Her family announced her death on Instagram, stating that she died on August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
“The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details”, the statement reads in part.
Chiume was born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, and began her career as a performer in 1977.
She gained popularity in South Africa for her roles in TV series such as “Inkom’ Edla Yodwa” and “Rhythm City”.
Internationally, she was known for her roles in Marvel’s “Black Panther” films and Beyoncé’s “Black Is King.”
The South African government has expressed condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues, remembering her outstanding work in the entertainment industry.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered”, the family wrote on X.
Chiume’s family has requested privacy during this difficult period and will communicate further details later.
