Sunday Sermon: Cheer Up, God Is Still in Control By The Very Revd Enenche G. O.

Text: John 16:33 (NIV)
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Life can be difficult. We all face moments of pain, confusion, disappointment, and sorrow. There are times when it feels like the weight of the world is sitting on our shoulders, and hope seems far away.

But in the middle of life’s storms, God speaks a powerful and encouraging word to us: “Cheer up.” This is not a call to ignore our pain, but a divine invitation to lift our eyes above the storm and fix our gaze on the One who has overcome it all.

Jesus understands our struggles. Hebrews 4:15 reminds us, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses…” Jesus knows what it feels like to be rejected, to suffer, to cry, and to be burdened. He doesn’t speak to us from a place of distance, but from a place of deep understanding. When He says, “Take heart,” He’s not speaking empty words He’s speaking as someone who has walked in our shoes and conquered every trial.

Yes, life comes with trouble, but the good news is that trouble is temporary, and victory in Jesus is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17 says, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” You may be weeping now, but joy is coming. You may feel broken, but healing is on the way.

The situation may not change overnight, but God’s promise stands firm: this too shall pass. So cheer up, because you are on your way to something greater.

Even when we can’t see it, God is working behind the scenes. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…” That means your pain is not wasted. Your tears are not ignored. God is weaving every moment—good and bad—into a story of redemption. You may feel like you’re stuck in the middle of a mess, but God is turning it into a message.

And you are not alone. Isaiah 41:10 tells us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” When others walk away, God stays. When you feel unseen, He sees. When you feel unheard, He listens. His presence is your strength, and His love is your foundation. You can cheer up—not because of who you are, but because of who He is.

So today, I encourage you to lift your head and lift your heart. Psalm 121:1-2 says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Don’t focus on the storm focus on the Savior. Don’t dwell on the problemtrust the Promise-Keeper.

Cheer up. Your story isn’t over. Your best days are not behind you they are ahead of you. God has not forgotten you, and He never will. So walk with confidence, speak with faith, and live with hope.

Conclusion:

At the heart of our encouragement is not just a positive mindset or temporary relief it is Jesus Christ Himself. He is the reason we can truly cheer up. He didn’t just give us words of comfort. He gave us His life. On the cross, He bore our pain, carried our shame, and defeated every power of darkness. And when He rose from the grave, He rose with all power, giving us a living hope that cannot be shaken.

When Jesus said, “Take heart, I have overcome the world,” He wasn’t just speaking of His own victory. He was speaking of your victory in Him. Everything you need peace, strength, healing, joy, purpose is found in Christ alone. He is our refuge, our Redeemer, and our ever-present help in times of trouble.

So cheer up not because the world is easy, but because Christ has already overcome it. Cheer up not because you’re strong enough, but because His grace is sufficient. Cheer up not because of what you feel, but because of what Jesus has finished.

Let your heart rest in this truth: Jesus is enough. And because He lives, you can face tomorrow with joy.

Cheer up Christ is with you, Christ is for you, and Christ is in you.
