Sunday Sermon: The Dangers Of Spiritual Blindness By The Very Rev Enenche G.O

Text: Matthew 15:14, Luke 6:39
Introduction:

In the Gospels, Jesus warns us about the dangers of spiritual blindness.

He says, “If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit” (Matthew 15:14, Luke 6:39). This phrase is more than just a metaphor; it’s a stark reality that we face in our spiritual journeys.

Today, we’ll explore what it means to be spiritually blind, the consequences of leading others while blind, and the only cure for this debilitating condition.

The Nature of Spiritual Blindness:

Spiritual blindness refers to a state where we’re unable to see or understand God’s truth, purposes, and will. It’s a condition that affects our hearts, minds, and souls, causing us to stumble and lose our way. Spiritual blindness can result from:

  1. Sin and rebellion against God
  2. Lack of spiritual discernment
  3. Ignorance of God’s Word
  4. Reliance on human wisdom rather than divine guidance

The Consequences of the Blind Leading the Blind:

When spiritually blind individuals lead others, the consequences are devastating:

  1. Deception: Blind leaders mislead their followers, causing them to stumble and fall.
  2. Destruction: Without divine guidance, blind leaders lead others into pitfalls and destructive paths.
  3. Division: Spiritual blindness creates confusion, leading to divisions and strife within the community.
  4. Distance from God: Blind leaders and their followers drift further away from God’s presence and purpose.

The Cure for Spiritual Blindness:

Thankfully, Jesus offers a remedy for spiritual blindness:

  1. Repentance: Recognize and confess our sin and spiritual ignorance.
  2. Seeking God’s Word: Study and apply Scripture to gain spiritual understanding.
  3. Faith in Jesus: Trust in Jesus, the Light of the World, to guide and illuminate our path.
  4. Humility: Acknowledge our limitations and dependence on God’s guidance.

Application:

As individuals and as a community, let’s take heed of Jesus’ warning:

  1. Examine yourself: Are you spiritually blind? Seek God’s light and guidance.
  2. Seek godly leadership: Follow leaders who demonstrate spiritual discernment and faithfulness to God’s Word.
  3. Guide others wisely: If you’re in a position of leadership, ensure you’re seeking God’s guidance and wisdom.
  4. Pray for spiritual sight: Ask God to open your eyes to His truth and purposes.

Conclusion:

The blind leading the blind is a dire situation, but Jesus offers hope and restoration. Let’s strive to walk in the light of God’s truth, seeking spiritual sight and guidance. May we be leaders who guide others wisely, and may we follow those who have been transformed by the power of the Gospel.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge our tendency towards spiritual blindness. Forgive us for our sin and ignorance. Open our eyes to Your truth and purposes. Guide us by Your Holy Spirit, that we may walk in Your light and lead others wisely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
