There was a fierce battle at the weekend between troops of Operation Hadin Kai and terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The terrorists reportedly ambushed the troops in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, leading to a two-hour gun battle.
The terrorists were reported to have recorded significant casualties following horrendous airstrikes from the air component of Operation Hadin Kai.
It was learnt that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) component of Operation Hadin Kai conducted targeted airstrikes on ISWAP strongholds within the Timbuktu Triangle, a critical area in Borno State known for its difficult terrain and strategic importance to the insurgents.
The precision airstrikes dismantled several ISWAP positions and disrupted their operational capabilities.
A significant number of terrorists were reportedly neutralised during the operation.
Airstrikes were carried out against Boko Haram factions in the Gwoza axis of the Mandara Mountain range, it was learnt.
The offensive targeted insurgents loyal to Ali Ngulde, a key Boko Haram commander, as part of ongoing efforts to weaken terrorist networks in the region.
Defence Headquarters spokesman Major General Edward Buba confirmed the attack but gave no casualty figures.
“It is confirmed that troops suffered setbacks in operations in the area.
“An inquiry has been set up to confirm the details of what transpired, after which I will provide the details in due course,” he said.
