President Bola Tinubu disclosed on Saturday evening that he nearly withdrew from the 2023 presidential race due to the overwhelming challenges he faced during the campaign.
Speaking at a special Iftar held in his honor at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu shared that his decision to stay in the race was strongly influenced by Aminu Masari, the then-governor of Katsina State. Masari, as Chairman of the North West Group, assured him of their unwavering support, urging him not to quit.
Tinubu recounted a moment of doubt during the campaign when a close relative accused him of causing the nationwide currency scarcity, claiming that people were facing hardships because of him.
The relative even suggested that he should not continue his presidential bid. However, Tinubu responded by emphasizing his commitment to running for president and offering the relative the requested N50,000. He later learned that the relative had kept part of the money, which left him feeling disheartened. Nonetheless, he remained determined, encouraged by Masari’s support.
Reflecting on his presidency, Tinubu highlighted the difficult decisions he made upon taking office, including the controversial removal of the fuel subsidy. Despite facing media backlash, he stood firm, believing it was necessary for the country’s long-term benefit.
Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Tinubu for his bold decisions, stating that future presidents would benefit from his leadership in addressing issues such as the fuel subsidy and economic challenges.
Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio acknowledged Tinubu’s capacity for forgiveness and his innovative approach to governance, while Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu emphasized Tinubu’s role in elevating future Nigerian leaders.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State and Minister of Communications Dr. Bosun Tijjani also praised the President for his decisive leadership and for giving individuals opportunities to serve, despite their past activism.
Professor Shaffideen Adeniyi Amuwo, a childhood friend of Tinubu, reminisced about their early years and the divine path that led Tinubu to his presidential position, reflecting on the remarkable journey that brought him to lead the country.
