What a fate! As you are reading this, the undertakers employed for the burial of this young couple to lower their bodies six feet under the ground must have returned home, leaving the grief-stricken families, friends, and well-wishers to mourn their tragic fate and bear the indelible mark of such a devastating loss.
For Dozie Okoye, a staff member at Zenith Bank, Ladipo Oluwole branch in Ikeja, Lagos, and Joan Gusiora, his beautiful wife—a nurse with a promising career in the United States—their journey has come to an abrupt and tragic end. Their remains would now be laid to rest in the red earth, marking the final chapter of their story, one that all mortals must face.
Just a month ago, on Saturday, February 22, the atmosphere at Momoh Gardens, 18 Wole Olateju Crescent, Lekki Phase 1, was filled with joy and celebration. Families, friends, and well-wishers had gathered for their wedding reception after the couple exchanged vows at Saint Jude’s Anglican Church on Ademola Ajasa Street, Omole Phase 1, Ikeja.
Sadly, on Saturday, March 22, another gathering took place, but this time, it was for mourning. The Okoye family in Agulu Village, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, received the two bodies for burial. Before this, Joan, who would have returned to the U.S. last Friday, would have been taken to her father’s compound in Enugu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government for a final farewell.
How Did This Happen?
Only the deceased could have given the full details of their final moments. However, from what family members and friends have pieced together, the couple was among the four victims of the Otedola Bridge gas explosion and subsequent fire on March 11.
They were reportedly returning home when they were caught in the inferno. Their car was directly behind the tanker that exploded, leaving them no chance of escape as the fire engulfed everything within seconds.
Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has become notorious for such tragedies, having witnessed multiple gas or petroleum tanker explosions in recent years, each claiming numerous lives.
The first sign of trouble came when the couple’s phones suddenly went off, making it impossible for anyone to reach them. Their friends grew worried and, after frantic efforts to track them down, eventually found their charred remains at the Burns Center in Gbagada and the Yaba Mortuary on the evening of Wednesday — days after the explosion.
In fact, the first and only clue that confirmed their fate was the discovery of their burnt car at the scene of the explosion. Their loved ones identified it through its registration number.
A family member recounted:
“Joan was due to return to the U.S. last Friday. Dozie had just resumed work that Tuesday after their wedding. Joan left her father’s house around 4:00 PM to meet Dozie so he could pick her up on his way home from work. That was the last time anyone heard from them.”
“The next morning, when Dozie failed to report to work—something unusual for him—his colleagues started calling his phone, but there was no response. At that point, they contacted his relatives, hoping for any information. When none came, they expanded their search. Upon hearing about the tanker explosion the previous day, they rushed to the scene, where they found his burnt car.”
A Community in Mourning
Family members, friends, and close associates of the couple have been inconsolable since the news broke. The parents, especially, are devastated, struggling to comprehend how a life filled with so much promise could be cut short in such a sudden, painful way.
Many have taken to social media to express their grief.

“My classmate, whom I attended her wedding just three weeks ago, died in a gas explosion at Otedola Bridge, Lagos. Joan, whoever did this to you will never know peace. My heart is heavy. I love you so much. You were supposed to travel back to the U.S. on Friday.”

A vibrant soul from us at Ladipo Oluwole Zenith Bank. Please come back to us. Two weeks ago, you had your wedding. Yesterday, you resumed work, and the same day, you and your wife were takenhbyh from us? Otedola Bridge, you have taken a newlywed couple from us.”
The Fragility of Life
This tragedy underscores life’s unpredictability. Dotun Oladipo, a journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, narrowly escaped the same fate. Last week, he recounted how he, his wife, and their daughter were on the same route but decided to take a different turn minutes before the explosion.
While Oladipo was fortunate, his mechanic, Rotimi Adeleye, who had just finished repairing his car, was not. He was caught in the inferno before he could escape.
As Oladipo mourns the loss, one can only imagine the pain the Okoye and Gusiora families are enduring. Their dreams were shattered in a moment, their love story abruptly rewritten into a tragedy.
