Suspected bandits have killed a resident and abducted nine others, including his wife and two children, during an attack on Babban Saura (PW) community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, as Nigerians marked the country’s 66th Independence Day.
A community source told the News Agency of Nigeria that the attackers invaded three houses in the community, beginning with the residence of an elderly man, where they abducted two of his children.
The assailants reportedly moved to another residence occupied by a man identified as Sikiru, forcing their way into the compound after breaking througth the fence.
Sikiru was said to have confronted the attackers after they entered his parlour and struggled with some of them.
The bandits eventually shot him dead before taking away his wife and their two children.
The attackers also raided a neighbouring residence, where they abducted a woman, identified as Maman Mubarak, and her four children.
Mubarak was later rescued by soldiers and local vigilantes, while her four children and the other victims remained in the custody of the attackers.
The commander of the local vigilantes, Usman Adamu, confirmed the incident, saying nine people were initially abducted.
Adamu said the vigilantes received a distress call and immediately alerted soldiers, who joined them in pursuing the attackers towards the Eastern Bypass.
He said the security personnel succeeded in rescuing Mubarak but were unable to apprehend the bandits, who escaped with the remaining victims.
Another resident, who identified himself as Anas, said Sikiru contacted him by phone after the attackers invaded the community.
Security agencies had yet to announce further details on efforts to rescue the remaining abductees as of the time of filing this report.
