A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu on Thursday sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the killing of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman, DECENCY GLOBAL NEWS reports.
The court, presided over by the Chief Judge of Yobe State High Court No. 1, Justice G.K. Kaigama, delivered the judgment after hearing the case and the testimony of eight prosecution witnesses.
Musa was arrested by operatives of the Yobe State Police Command on January 4, 2024, following the death of his 42-year-old wife at their residence in New Bra-Bra Housing Estate, Damaturu. He was subsequently charged with culpable homicide.
According to the police account, Musa reported the incident, claiming that he discovered his wife had been stabbed in the neck while they were sleeping on the same bed.
He reportedly told the police that he woke up after hearing his wife shouting and found her bleeding heavily from a stab wound to her neck.
The police account further stated that Musa claimed to have seen a man holding a knife and that, when he confronted the alleged attacker, two other persons came to the man’s aid and helped him escape.
However, during the trial, Musa pleaded not guilty to the charge, maintaining through his lawyers that other persons had broken into their home and killed his wife.
Delivering judgment, Justice Kaigama found Musa guilty of culpable homicide, ruling that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge rejected the defendant’s plea of not guilty, holding that the prosecution had established all the essential elements of the offence.
Justice Kaigama informed the convict of his right to appeal the judgment within 30 days, in accordance with the applicable law.
