A man, Obinna, has prayed Grade A Customary Court, sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to put an end to the union between him and his wife, Chidima, on the account of irresponsibility, infidelity and threat to his life.
Obinna said that it took him years to know that he was married to a whore.
He explained that he did all he could to make Chidinma comfortable and well loved.
The plaintiff further said that he lavished the defendant with care and attention on a daily basis.
He added that he saw to it that she lacked nothing.
According to Obinna, he constructed a shop for his wife in front of their house and stocked it with goods in order that she might be financially independent, but that rather than be grateful to him for his good gesture; she betrayed him through her deceit and promiscuity.
Obinna stated that he had the shock of his life when a fellow landlord confessed to him that he had been sleeping with his wife.
According to Obinna, the man stated that Chidinma lied to him that her husband is dead.
The plaintiff added that the defendant was a bad example to their children.
He stated that Chidinma was a drunk.
He also said that she instigated their children against him.
Obinna stated that Chidinma was a threat to his life and therefore prayed the court to dissolve their relationship.
Obinna pleaded that the court rules that Chidima vacate his house.
The plaintiff made a commitment to paying a year’s rent for the defendant’s new accommodation.
Chidima was absent in court although she was served with the court procedures.
Obinna, in his testimony, said, “My lord, my wife is a whore and has betrayed the trust I had in her.
“I paid a whole sum of N490,000 as my wife’s bride price because I love and cherish her.
“I showered Chidinma with love and attention.
“I ensured she was comfortable and that she lacked nothing.
“I desired that she had a source of livelihood and that she was financially independent, and as such, I constructed a shop for her in front of our house.
“I spent a fortune stocking her shop with goods which she was selling and gradually stabilising herself financially.
“I believed all was well with our marriage and relationship until I received a bombshell from a fellow landlord in our neighbourhood.
“This man confessed to me that he had been sleeping with my wife.
“I could not believe my ears.
“This man told me that my wife lied to him that I was dead.
“I confronted my wife with this information and she could not deny it.
“She ran away from home for a while and returned again.
“I stopped eating at home after this revelation because I knew that my life was no longer safe.
“My wife, rather than being remorseful, became worse.
“She took to drinking and is always in the habit of drinking herself to stupor.
“She is obviously a bad example to our children.
“She has succeeded in poisoning our children’s mind and instigating them against me.
“My lord, I no longer wish to continue in this marriage with my wife.
“I want her to vacate my house.
“I further pray this honourable court to rule that we go our different ways.
“I make a commitment of paying one year rent of her new accommodation.”
The court president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on the defendant.
