Scientists have revealed that Earth has now reached about the halfway point of its expected lifespan, but they say the biggest concern is not what will happen in 5 billion years. Instead, they believe life on Earth could become impossible much sooner, in about 1 billion years.
According to researchers, Earth was formed around 4.5 billion years ago, while the Sun has been burning hydrogen in a stable stage that is expected to last about 9 to 10 billion years. This means both the Earth and the Sun have now reached nearly the middle of that long period.
Scientists explain that in around 5 billion years, the Sun will run out of hydrogen in its core and begin expanding into what is known as a red giant.
